World Percussion Master ClassTuesday, August 3 6:00pm Nashville Jazz Workshop 1319 Adams Street From Dann Sherrill: I want to let you know about a new class we are offering at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. In an effort to give drummers and percussionists a taste of what is available percussively from around the world, we are presenting the NJW World Percussion Masterclass series. This is going to be a fabulous class. This class will feature six different percussion genres from around the world taught by masters in each field. We will meet every Tuesday at 6:00 PM from August 3 through September 7. Here are our instructors: Shannon Holland of the Global Education Center is the deepest, most well versed teacher of authentic West African Drumming in the area and will present an overview of the how to's of the djembe, djun djun, and other West African percussion. World percussion phenom and award winning recording artist Kirby Shelstad will give you a great overview of the ins and outs of Indian Rhythm, tabla drums and the Konokol system of rhythm singing. The study of Indian Konokol will broaden your rhythmic horizons beyond anything else you can learn. Kirby is not only a master of rhythm but is also a master of melody and harmony and is a world-class vibraphonist and accomplished film score composer as well.
No studio percussionist has more recording credits than Tom Roady. He has provided, innovative percussion tracks for the widest possible range of today's country and pop artists. Tom will not only show you how to add percussion to the mix to make a track come to life but also what it takes to make it as a studio percussionist in his class on Studio Percussion.
Glen Caruba is the absolute last word in Afro-Cuban drumming. The list of people Glen has worked with in both pop and Latin music is stunning. Rare is it to find a player who is both a virtuoso and a great teacher. Glen has both these qualities. Congas, Timbales, bongos, shekere, there is no better person from whom to learn Afro-Cuban percussion.
Tom Roady returns to introduce the class to the wild, wonderful world of Electronic Percussion. Tom is a master of the Zendrum, Handsonic, Wave Drum, Mandala drum and has wrestled a bank of sound modules into submission for this class. You will learn the basics of midi percussion, looping, and how to bring it all together to make music. The Brazilian percussion segment will be taught by yours truly (Dann Sherrill). I've been active playing Brazilian & Latin music for 20 years or so and am the leader of Trio Ginga and Music City Samba, two influential bands out of Nashville. I play sessions, teach and play lots of live gigs. In this class you will learn the basics of the Surdo, pandeiro, tamborim, cuica, atabaque/timbau, udu and caxixi. You will learn how these instruments function in Brazilian music and how you might creatively use these instruments to express yourself in American music.
Tuitition for the six-week class is $200. If you can't make all six classes, you can attend individual classes for a reduced rate. Admission: $200.00 |
