TJBS Great Albums Concert Series
The next TJBS Great Albums Concert is set to take place Sunday, April, 2019 at 7 pm in The Lounge at the City Winery. April's Great Album highlights the Michael Brecker recording, Tales From the Hudson, led by saxophonist Rahsaan Barber. Rahsaan will be joined by pianist Matt Endahl, guitarist Lindsey Miller, bassist Brian Allen and drummer Bob Harsen.
Michael Brecker was a major influence on many of today’s young saxophonists. This album, recorded in 1996, was Brecker’s fourth as a leader and won him two Grammys. The recording falls squarely in the mainstream of 1990’s jazz, with personnel that was a veritable who’s who of jazz from that period: Pat Metheny, Joey Calderazzo, Jack DeJohnette, and Dave Holland, with contributions from McCoy Tyner and Don Alias. Tales from the Hudson was recorded at the Power Station in New York City in 1996.
Since earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from Manhattan School of Music in 2005, Rahsaan Barber has set out on a singular path of musical excellence in performance, composition, education and entrepreneurship. Residing proudly in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, Barber enjoys a career that encompasses performing and recording in an ever-expanding range of musical styles including jazz – his “first love” – as well as blues, funk, fusion, soul, Latin and World music. Rahsaan’s passionate, sincere and studious approach to music-making has garnered professional appearances onstage with heavyweights of all genres including Gladys Knight, Winard Harper, Meghan Trainor, Martina McBride, Chester Thompson, The Temptations, Idina Menzel, Greg Allman, Delfeayeo Marsalis, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Chris Stapleton, Duffy Jackson, Kirk Franklin, and the Wooten Brothers. The saxophonist has performed on many of the world’s most prestigious stages for music including The Village Vanguard, Birdland, Lincoln Center, the Ryman, the Jazz Kitchen, the Kennedy Center, and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
