Advanced Vocal Literature: The Women Composers of Tin Pan Alley

Class Schedule: Aug. 8, 15, 22 – 11am-1pm

This 3-week session will Honor Women’s History in Jazz by celebrating the compositions of Dorothy Fields, Billie Holiday, Ann Ronnel, Bernice Petkere, Betty Comden, Kay Swift with songs such as “Don’t Explain,” Lullaby of the Leaves,” “Spring Can Hang You Up The Most,” Lucky To Be Me,” It Amazes Me,” “Willow Weep For Me,” and more. We’ll expand the rich lineage of women writers.

Course Description

Honor Women’s History in Jazz by celebrating the compositions of Dorothy Fields, Billie Holiday, Ann Ronnel, Bernice Petkere, Betty Comden, Blossom Dearie, Helen Humes, and Mary Lou Williams. We’ll expand the rich lineage of women writers by also exploring the work of more contemporary writers, such as Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell.

Suggested Prerequisite: Five Great American Songbook literature classes and Chart Writing
