960 Special Topic, Other, Special Topic, or Workshop
This course outlines the development of jazz-hip hop fusion, one of today’s most influential jazz subgenres. Beginning with the birth of hip hop in the 1970s, we will trace the ways that jazz and hip hop developed and came together in the 1980s and 1990s in the work of artists like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, A Tribe Called Quest, and Roy Hargrove. Finally, we will explore the music and influence of 21st century artists like Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, and Marquis Hill, whose work draws on the hip hop and jazz traditions.
