Join Spotlight Thursday: Duo Session with Lori Mechem with Calabri Foti, Bob McChesney at the Nashville Jazz Workshop in the Jazz Cave on Thursday, July 6, 2023. This intimate performance is hosted by NJW co-founder Lori Mechem on piano, in duets with vocalist Calabri Foti and trombonist Bob McChesney. Each artist will perform a 40 minute duo set with Lori. The concert begins at 7:30pm CDT (Doors at 7:00pm).

CALABRIA FOTI: Calabria Foti is an American singer, violinist, composer, arranger, author, and educator. A consummate musician and a dynamic entertainer, Calabria is a connoisseur of music, from Classical to Broadway. Ms. Foti’s recordings and live shows have been praised by such diverse artists as piano virtuoso Van Cliburn, composer Johnny Mandel, trumpeter Chris Botti, and a host of other music and entertainment luminaries. Upon hearing her CD, “A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening” (2007, MoCo Records), legendary singer Johnny Mathis said, “ Listening to a beautiful voice is one of my greatest pleasures in life. Listening to this recording of Calabria Foti’s voice is some of the most beautiful and artistic music I have ever heard. She is a treasure!”
BOB MCCHESNEY: Primarily self-taught, at a young age, Bob discovered a unique way of articulating on the slide trombone, called “doodle tonguing”. He has since authored what is considered to be the definitive treatise on the subject, called, “Doodle Studies and Etudes”. The method book has been critically acclaimed and endorsed by trombonists and music educators all over the world.
A resident of Los Angeles, Bob is a fixture in the recording studios, where he has enjoyed a long career with studio orchestras scoring hundreds of films and television shows. He can also be heard on CDs for Barbra Streisand, Shakira, Michael Buble’, Natalie Cole, Rod Stewart, Chicago, Michael Bolton, and the following Grammy-winning CDs: “Ray Charles: Genius Loves Company”, Diana Krall’s “When I Look in Your Eyes”, and most recently, Arturo Sandoval’s “Dear Diz”, where he was a featured soloist. Legendary composer and conductor Lalo Schifrin exclaimed, “Bob McChesney is a virtuoso and has the gift to bring us the joy of music at the highest level.”
LORI MECHEM: A respected jazz pianist, composer and educator, Lori, along with her husband Roger Spencer, has lived in the Nashville area since 1988. In addition to directing production shows and conducting musical theatre, she has performed with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Red Holloway, Jimmy Smith, Cal Collins, Roy McCurdy, Terry Gibbs, Pete Christlieb, Edie Gorme, Bobby Militello, Kirk Whalum and Donna McElroy. A native of Anderson Indiana, Lori received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
Lori’s first CD, “Welcome to Brazil” was nominated for “Best Jazz Album of the Year” by the Nashville Music Awards in 1997. In 2003, Lori’s second CD, “Shiny Stockings, rose to #26 on the jazz charts. In 2005 she released a Brazilian Christmas album on Village Square Music. Since then she has released three more CD’s: “April in Paris” (a second Count Basie album), “The Dream of Life” (original meditation music), and “Return to Ipanema.”
