Derrek Phillips

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Derrek Phillips was heavily indoctrinated by the sounds of Tower of Power, Journey, Sly and the Family Stone, Metallica, Tony! Toni! Tone! and Digital Underground. Thanks to his parents and older brothers, Derrek developed an early obsession for music. This obsession led to years in local bands, youth and community orchestras and the Concord Blue Devils drum and bugle corps, as well as drum lessons with the late, great Tony Williams. This same obsession took him to the East Coast to pursue a degree in jazz studies at William Paterson University. Derrek has spent his early adult years working in the New York jazz scene and is now a fixture in the well-rounded Nashville scene. Over the years, he has worked with a long list of artists including BRETT ELDREDGE, BRITTANY HOWARD, VANESSA WILLIAMS , HANK WILLIAMS JR, DAVE DOUGLAS, GREG OSBY, RONNIE JORDAN, CHRIS POTTER, VIJAY IYER, JIMMY HALL, DR. JOHN, KURT ELLING, CHARLIE HUNTER, THE McCRARY SISTERS, CHARLIE PEACOCK, ERIN BODE,  MICHAEL MCDONALD and GLORIA GAYNOR. He also has two Grammies to his credit (2014, 2020). Derrek Phillips is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Istanbul Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Alclair Audio In-ear monitors, Drum Dots, Stack Ring Percussion and Vater Sticks.
